Got to see the Paul Klee exhibit at the Jewish Museum before it closes tomorrow.

I had no idea so much of his work included representations of antisemitism, fascism, and the dangers of groupthink in children and how it can easily lead to violence. Some really chilling stuff.

And, of course, I saw the Angelus Novus (The Angel of History), the Klee work owned by the philosopher Walter Benjamin that famously influenced his writing.

The Lemberger Congregation Anshei Ashkenaz, converted into a church around 1970, is one of the last remaining tenement synagogue buildings in the neighborhood.

Noah Allen, the father of a fourth grader, typically sends his daughter to and from the Abraham Joshua Heschel School on a bus.

But twice a week, he drives her to the Upper West Side school so she can attend early morning choir practice; occasionally, he attends prayer services at the pluralistic Jewish day school when parents are invited.

“We have tried to make it a priority to go to those things,” said Allen, who lives in Washington Heights, adding that the congestion pricing tolls that went into effect this week “will definitely change our plan on how to get to Heschel.”

For the last six years, some Jews on the Upper West Side have practiced an unusual tradition: peering into a storefront where a kosher grocery store used to be.

The tradition took on new intensity a year and a half ago, when rumors swept through the neighborhood’s kosher-keeping Jews that a new kosher grocery store was planned for the space vacated when Seasons Kosher closed in December 2018. But month after month, even as signage and shelves slowly went up, the storefront remained stubbornly closed for business.

That changed this week, when Six60One opened its doors. Named for its address on Amsterdam Avenue, the supermarket was flooded in the hours after its midweek opening with excited customers marveling at the aisles of sometimes hard-to-find kosher goods, ranging from Heinz ketchup to pre-checked, bug-free leafy vegetables and herbs.

As the first Jewish day school named for Solomon Schechter, an influential rabbi in Conservative Judaism, Schechter Queens only offered egalitarian prayer, where boys and girls prayed together. But families at the school pressed for students to have the option to choose a non-egalitarian option.

That was seven years ago. After the Orthodox prayer service launched, it became so popular that only two students continued going to the traditional one, recalled the school’s principal, Rafi Kalman. It ended entirely.

As drought conditions continue to put New York City at an elevated risk of fire, Rabbi Shimon Hecht needs a Hanukkah miracle.

Hecht, who leads Chabad of Park Slope, oversees the annual illumination of a massive, 32-foot tall menorah at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza, just outside the main entrance to Prospect Park. Since 1984, the kerosene lantern menorah has been lit each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, which this year begins on the evening of Dec. 25.

That four-decade tradition could now be snuffed out.

It’s a notable return for the festival, which was indefinitely postponed in 2023 in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. This year, it aims to “highlight the stories of those who stand together for coexistence and an end to violence,” according to its website.
